Think about travel benefits

Some credit cards offer travel perks that may add value depending on your lifestyle.

Which travel benefit would you use most?

This is an informational experience. Approval depends on the financial institution’s review and eligibility criteria.

How travel benefits can add value

Travel benefits can add meaningful value when they match how often and where a person travels. Cards may offer no foreign transaction fees, statement credits, hotel rewards, airport benefits or protections for eligible trips. The challenge is determining which features will actually be used.

A premium list of benefits does not automatically make a card the best choice. Travelers should compare the annual fee, booking requirements, redemption options and restrictions before applying.

No foreign transaction fees

This benefit can be useful for international travel and for some purchases processed by merchants outside the United States. A typical foreign transaction fee applied across meals, transportation and hotel charges can increase the total cost of a trip.

Before traveling, confirm that the card is widely accepted at the destination and understand how currency conversion works. When a merchant offers to charge in your home currency, compare the conversion carefully because the merchant’s rate may be less favorable.

Travel credits

Travel credits may reimburse eligible purchases such as flights, hotels, incidental airline charges or bookings through a specific platform. Some credits are automatic, while others require activation. They may reset annually, monthly or by account anniversary.

Count a credit at full value only when it applies to spending you would make anyway. A restricted credit that changes your normal booking behavior may be worth less than its advertised amount.

Hotel rewards

Hotel-focused benefits can include bonus points, annual free-night certificates, status or property credits. These benefits may be valuable for travelers who regularly stay with the same brand. Users who prefer independent hotels or vacation rentals may receive less value.

Free-night certificates often have category, value or expiration restrictions. Availability may also vary, so planning ahead is important.

Airport and travel perks

Lounge access, priority services, trusted traveler credits and travel protections can improve convenience. However, access may depend on enrollment, participating locations, guest limits or a qualifying ticket.

Travel insurance benefits usually include detailed terms. Coverage for delays, cancellations, baggage or rental cars may require paying for the trip with the eligible card and submitting documentation.

When a travel card makes sense

Estimate how many trips you take each year and which benefits you would use. Compare the value with the annual fee and with a simpler cash back card. Also consider the rewards earned on everyday purchases, since travel spending may represent only a small part of the budget.

Travel rewards are most valuable when they support trips you already plan to take. Avoid carrying a balance or spending more simply to earn points. The right card should reduce costs or improve convenience without creating financial pressure.
