Security and control matter

Many users also look for tools that help manage spending and protect purchases.

Which security feature matters most to you?

This is an informational experience. Approval depends on the financial institution’s review and eligibility criteria.

Why credit card security features are important

Security features have become an essential part of the credit card experience. Cardholders use accounts for online shopping, subscriptions, travel and everyday purchases, which means fast access to alerts and account controls can be just as important as rewards.

No security feature can prevent every problem, but a combination of monitoring, issuer tools and responsible behavior can reduce risk and help users respond quickly when something appears unusual.

Fraud alerts and transaction notifications

Real-time or near-real-time alerts can notify cardholders about purchases, declined transactions, online activity or spending above a chosen amount. These messages may help identify an unauthorized charge quickly, especially when the card is used frequently.

Alerts should be configured using current contact information. Users should also be cautious with messages that request passwords or full card details. When in doubt, open the issuer’s official app or call the number on the back of the card instead of following an unfamiliar link.

Card lock controls

A temporary lock can be useful when a card is lost or misplaced. Many apps allow the cardholder to disable new purchases while searching for the card. This is different from reporting the card permanently lost or stolen, and some recurring transactions may still process.

If theft or unauthorized use is suspected, contact the issuer promptly. A temporary lock should not replace the formal reporting process when the card information may be compromised.

Purchase protection and dispute tools

Some cards offer protection for eligible purchases against damage or theft for a limited period. Others may extend warranties or provide tools for disputing billing errors. Coverage varies significantly, and exclusions, limits and documentation requirements apply.

Keep receipts, order confirmations and communication with merchants. When a product or service does not arrive as expected, contacting the merchant is often the first step before beginning a formal dispute.

Mobile app management

A well-designed app can help users check balances, pay bills, review rewards, change alerts and manage authorized users. Convenience can improve account oversight, but the device itself should be protected with a strong passcode, biometric security and current software.

Avoid accessing sensitive financial accounts through unsecured public networks when possible. Never share one-time verification codes, passwords or card security information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Build a personal security routine

Review statements every month, even when alerts are active. Use unique passwords, enable multifactor authentication when available and remove card details from websites you no longer use. Report suspicious activity quickly and follow the issuer’s instructions.

The best security feature is the one you understand and will actually use. When comparing cards, consider how easy it is to control the account, receive support and respond to a problem. Strong rewards are useful, but reliable security tools can provide everyday confidence.
